About Little India OUR STORY Little India is a family business. Founded by Sukhi Gill in Dunedin in 1991, the family restaurant has grown from humble beginnings to a nationwide business, with over 16 Little India restaurants throughout New Zealand. OUR HISTORY Sukhi and Joanna Gill began with a small dairy, and adjoining fish and chip shop, in Ravensbourne just outside Dunedin. When Sukhi’s mother and father visited from India, Sukhi decided to add a few Indian dishes to the fish and chip shop’s menu. Soon there were lines of people down the street wanting to enjoy the new Indian dishes. With a single electric stove struggling to keep up with demand, Joanna (a chef) and Sukhi (an accountant) decided to open a New Zealand Indian restaurant. After training in a family friend’s restaurant in Australia, Sukhi returned and opened the first Little India restaurant in 1991. Little India is a family business. Founded by Sukhi Gill in Dunedin in 1991, the family restaurant has grown from humble beginnings to a nationwide business, with over 16 Little India restaurants throughout New Zealand. ABOUT US WE HAVE LIVED IN NELSON FOR 17 YEARS AND STARTED THE RESTAURANT WITH THE HOPE TO BRING VIETNAMESE CUISINE TO NELSON’S COMMUNITY. WE WERE AWARE THAT THERE WERE NO VIETNAMESE RESTAURANTS IN NELSON, AND THAT NELSON DID NOT KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE VIETNAMESE CULTURE AND FOOD. WE WANTED TO PRESENT THE VIETNAMESE FOOD IN A WAY THAT MADE PEOPLE INTERESTED IN VIETNAM AS A PLACE TO VISIT ONE DAY. OUR CHEF THE ANH PHAN HAD 20 YEARS’ EXPERIENCE WITH VIETNAMESE CUISINE, AND WAS ALSO FROM VIETNAM. THE NAME THE “THE GREEN BAMBOO” STEMS FROM THEIR CULTURE AND INTEREST IN BAMBOO. VIETNAMESE PEOPLE ARE SURROUNDED BY BAMBOO, AND IT BECOMES AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE LIVES. IT HAD BEEN A SIGNIFICANT PART OF THEIR HERITAGE FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS. Our Menu Find Out More ….

Nearing its 40th anniversary, the Nelson Market is an integral part of the Nelson community, bringing crowds into the central city on Saturday mornings. The market was launched by Nita Knight in the late 1970s. She was struck by the vibrancy of the region and the range of arts and crafts produced here. Held first in the Miller’s Acres Carpark, it quickly outgrew this space and was moved to Montgomery Square. As the Nelson region has grown, the range of products available has dramatically increased. Alongside the likes of potters, woodworkers and fibre artists, there is now a substantial variety of food stuffs; chocolate and cheesemakers, fresh produce and nuts for example, along with an abundance of locally made clothing, jewellery and many crafts. Takeaway foods with local and international flavours are very popular thanks to the large range of food carts. The Nelson Market has been a business incubator for many brands that have gone on to achieve both national, and in some cases, international success. Pic’s Peanut Butter, Anathoth Jams and Hogarth Chocolates are but a few of these. It would be a rare visitor to Nelson who doesn’t know about the Nelson Market before they arrive. It […]
