Nelson City, New Zealand The Provincial Apartments is a recently renovated historic building (2017)– one of the very first hotels built in Nelson in 1865. No longer a tavern, it was where the sailors used to dock their boats and come in for a drink. The first floor of the building has just been fully refurbished into modern, stylish, self-contained inner-city apartments with a design studio and cafe below. Accommodation for singles, couples & families in the very heart of Nelson City. Situated a two minute walk from the very centre of Nelson – referred as Nelson City fringe. Minutes from bars, cafes, restaurants and galleries. All rooms are situated on the top level, stairwell takes you to three separate apartments, all with kitchens and TVs, Free WiFi. Nearing its 40th anniversary, the Nelson Market is an integral part of the Nelson community, bringing crowds into the central city on Saturday mornings. The market was launched by Nita Knight in the late 1970s. She was struck by the vibrancy of the region and the range of arts and crafts produced here. Held first in the Miller’s Acres Carpark, it quickly outgrew this space and was moved to Montgomery Square. As the Nelson region has grown, the range of products available has dramatically increased. Alongside the likes of potters, woodworkers and fibre artists, there is now a substantial variety of food stuffs; chocolate and cheesemakers, fresh produce and nuts for example, along with an abundance of locally made clothing, jewellery and many crafts. Takeaway foods with local and international flavours are very popular thanks to the large range of food carts. The Nelson Market has been a business incubator for many brands that have gone on to achieve both national, and in some cases, international success. Pic’s Peanut Butter, Anathoth Jams and Hogarth Chocolates are but a few of these. It would be a rare visitor to Nelson who doesn’t know about the Nelson Market before they arrive. It […]

Nelson’s Kiwi Kai has gone from being a market stall to a bricks-and-mortar shop bringing Maori kai to the masses. Opening their doors to the public on Wednesday Kiwi Kai launched on Tuesday after a Maori blessing and a kapa haka performance. Kiwi Kai Nelson business manager Reni Wereta-Gargiulo said they were very excited about being able to offer Maori food to Nelsonians through the shop. “I’m noticing at the market that people want the food more than one day a week. “So being able to offer our kai every day of the week is very exciting.” Wereta-Gargiulo started Kiwi Kai in Nelson in 2009 and has since been a known-presence at the Nelson Saturday market as well as the Motueka market the last couple of months. She said another business named itself Kiwi Kai in Rotorua five years ago, and recently they decided to merge the two businesses. Kiwi Kai Rotorua business partner Chris Poipoi said the Nelson shop, in the old Tozzetti bakery site, was the first step towards building the Kiwi Kai brand into a franchise. “It’s a massive journey that we’re realising. It’s very exciting and there’s emotions involved in it as well as relief that […]

BILL BURKE, LOCAL NELSON ARTIST AND PICTURE FRAMER Living in Little Kaiteriteri with views up towards the Abel Tasman National Park, the golden sands and azure waters of this scenic location have been the inspiration for many of Bill Burke’s paintings. His oil and pastel artworks are often quirky, capturing subtle nuances, from the satisfied expression of a sow lying on her side feeding her piglets, to the weather-worn face of an old farmer standing in a corrugated iron shed. Bill says he paints pretty much whatever catches his eye, and is as much known for his colourful landscapes, busy maritime scenes and farmyard animals, as he is for his portrayal of people. From an early age Bill Burke’s passion and focus has always been drawing and painting. He began drawing with pen & ink while at Nelson College, holding his first exhibition as a nineteen year old at the Chez Elco Gallery, drawing old Nelson historic homes and buildings. Bill spent a number of years painting in watercolour before introducing oils and then pastels, wonderfully recording New Zealand’s unique light and vibrant colours. Bill’s extremely polished technical skills are evident in his works and his painterly approach has often […]

We regularly scour the high street and the globe to provide you with fresh outfit inspiration to make sure you feel as if the world is your own personal catwalk. THE STORY OF DOTTI The 1980’s were a time of reinvention, of power dressing and celebrating individual, head-turning style. During this fast-paced era Dotti was born. Founders Raymond Levis and Linda Bowen launched Dotti in Sydney in 1981. Rumours persist that the inspiration for the Dotti name comes either from Linda’s mother Dorothy, reputedly a style icon in her own right, or from the stylish shopping destination in Rome, known as Via Condotti. In 2004 the Dotti chain became a part of The Just Group and began expanding throughout Australia and New Zealand. In as little time as it takes to bat your lashes, Dotti exploded from just ten stores to opening its 100th store in December 2009. In 2012 Dotti launched an Australian online store and more recently in 2015 a New […]
