VOLUME is an independent bookshop stocking interesting fiction, incisive non-fiction, wonderful children’s books, and the best art and lifestyle books.

VOLUME is not a book supermarket – more of a book delicatessen. Booksellers Stella Chrysostomou and Thomas Koed, who have between them over 35 years of experience in the book trade, select books from all over the world so that customers can find not only the books they have been looking for but also the books they hadn’t realised they were looking for.

VOLUME is a place for discovery, and Stella and Thomas are always happy to help customers find just the right book for themselves, or as gifts. VOLUME has been operating at 15 Church Street (diagonally opposite Jen Hansen Silversmith) in Nelson’s Church Street Bohemian Quarter for 14 months, and its success is due to the enthusiasm of the community that has developed around it. Apart from being a place where people share their passion for books, the shop is a focus for events such as literary readings, writing courses, book launches and discussion groups.

They hold popular monthly book-groups for children and teenagers, and are pleased to support the Mapua Literary Festival. The shop, with its sharp minimalist decor softened by old wooden furniture, filled with natural light, is the perfect place to browse. VOLUME are also very active on-line.

Their weekly newsletter of reviews, news, giveaways and new releases has subscribers throughout the country and overseas, and their book-related posts on social media, Facebook and Instagram have a wide following. Stella and Thomas find that this activity not only leads to sales through the VOLUME website but helps to associate people’s book-related thinking with the physical shop, making it the focus of a lively literary culture.

Nelson people have proven to be very discerning in their taste for books, and appreciative of the expert attention they receive at VOLUME. As well as the books on the shelves, Stella and Thomas make many special orders every day for new and out-of-print books, from the ordinary to the obscure.

The also offer a reading subscription service, choosing monthly books for all sorts of readers, in Nelson and around the country.

To counteract the nationwide drift to purchasing from overseas internet retailers, VOLUME offer a carefully curated stock, personal expert service, and a bookshop in which discovering books and other readers has become an important part of customers’ lives.
