Nelson Young Professionals (NYP) – a champion for young people

Are you new to the Nelson/Tasman region and want to meet some likeminded people? Have you moved to here for work and want to call this place home? Have you been abroad and have returned to put down your roots in NZ’s lifestyle capital? Are you roughly 20-35 years old and proactive when it comes to meeting people?

If the answer to any of the above is yes, then Nelson Young Professionals (NYP) exists to bring you together in a social or professional capacity with other energetic people like you.

Founded in 2009 NYP, was established as a not for profit organisation by a group of young accountants, lawyers and bankers that wanted to socialise and network with like-minded people.

10 years later and stronger than ever NYP continues to be run by a dedicated team of committee members that volunteer their time to bring fresh events and opportunities to Nelson’s vibrant young workforce.

Our members do not fit a stereotype and range from teachers to builders to travel consultants, digger operators, tradesman, project managers, doctors, engineers, lawyers and everything in between. “Professional” doesn’t mean the same in Nelson as it does in the big cities. Neither does “Young” – while most of our members are around 20-35 years old, we have had some fantastic members in their 40s.

NYP now also organises a wide range of activities within the community to keep people engaged with other members and also what is happening around them in the wider community. These events include sports teams, social outings, networking meetups, professional development workshops, guest speakers, volunteering opportunity’s and much more.

Businesses in Nelson are seeing the value of NYP when it comes to retaining young talent in the region. Creating a social group and long-term friends plays a big part in helping people settle into work life and choosing Nelson to call home. As a result, NYP are now offering a corporate membership structure where businesses can sign team members up to NYP at a special corporate rate with corporate benefits.

NYP is funded by events and membership fees. A big thanks also goes out to Intepeople Nelson that have partnered with NYP by sponsoring the professional development series. Its these local businesses that can see what NYP is achieving in the community and their support helps NYP to add more value to our members.

To wrap this altogether, NYP is a champion for young people and are committed to making Nelson/Tasman a great place to Work, Play and Stay.

A great way to meet fellow NYP members is the monthly drinks. This is generally held on the last Friday of every month at a local bar, café, restaurant and is free to attend
