Nelson Table Tennis Inc are hosting the Inaugural Corporate ADAPTIVE TABLE TENNIS Tournament at their Saxton Stadium complex.

The Dan Makey Memorial Trophy will be presented to the winning corporate team and other trophies awarded to the individual players in a singles knockout competition. Dan was a much loved and respected local paraplegic sportsman who tragically passed away four years ago.

• Registration and practice will be held on Tuesday the 13^th of August from 7pm till 9pm in the table tennis stadium which is on the southern side of the main Saxton Stadium.
• The six week tournament will start the following Tuesday the 20^th of August.
• Each team will play a different team each night. All players will get to play singles against each player over the six weeks. 
• Team and individual points will be calculated each night which will determine the final teams ( and singles) draw for a playoff to be held on Sunday afternoon 22^nd of September. This will follow after the Nelson Table Tennis Annual Closed Tournament has finished.
• Table Tennis Nelson Inc, club captain Paul Op Den Buysch will kindly run the tournament for us.
• Each corporate team will consist of 3 players with a maximum of 8 teams. Cost per team is $100 which covers the team stadium entry fees and costs.
• It will be ideal if participating organisations can provide their own staff members or their family and friends to make up a team however we will use our members to make up the numbers if required.
• We expect each team to use their sponsors name for identification and publicity purposes. This is an easy fun game to play for the experienced and beginners.

What is Adaptive table tennis​?

Table Tennis Nelson Inc is currently trialing the double bounce version of table tennis. This slows the play down so it is ideal for people who have a mobility disability or those without a disability but keen to play this easier version. We call it Adaptive table tennis.

There is two notable changes to the table tennis playing rules which include a drop ball serve and during play the ball is bounced over the net for each return. The Adaptive game follows the same protocols as regular table tennis is played and conducted.

Double bounce version of Tennis was introduced for those confined to wheelchairs over 40 years ago which now has a large world following known as Wheelchair Tennis so we feel by including the extra bounce to table tennis we will be the first NZ table tennis association to trial this and maybe in the world!
