? Post-lockdown pets tip #5: Reduce the escalation of anxiety
For animals who are experiencing separation anxiety, one of the biggest triggers is anything that alerts them to their humans leaving the house.
Pets are highly observant – and may learn the routine that leads up to people going out, like putting on shoes and picking up keys.
To reduce the escalation of anxiety, it’s a good idea to try and make these ‘unreliable indicators’ of leaving.
For example, family members can put on shoes and pick up keys – and then take them off and sit down on the couch.
By breaking these associations, you can help reduce the escalation of anxiety which usually accompanies leading up to leaving the house – and teach your pet not to respond with distress to these sounds.
