We are back!! | Theatre Royal Nelson
Dear Theatre Lover,
We are delighted to announce that we are reopening the theatre from Monday 15 June, with our first show scheduled for Friday June 19. As there are no physical distance requirements in Alert Level 1, all live events with audiences can recommence. We would like to assure you that we are taking all the necessary extra hygiene measures. Contact tracing is in place through the ticketing system, and when entering the theatre, we kindly ask you to scan the official government QR code that can be found on posters throughout the foyer.
Mark Hadlow
The Theatre Royal was presented with a wonderful opportunity when Mark Hadlow moved to Nelson. The well known NZ actor is a strong supporter of the Theatre Royal, and has recently accepted to become the theatre’s new patron. As such he is offering his acclaimed one man show MAMIL (Middle Aged Man in Lycra) to Nelsonians with ‘Pay what you can’ tickets. Those who are struggling financially and would normally not be able to afford to attend a professional performance can buy heavily reduced tickets from $10. However, more expensive tickets will also be available for those who can and want to support the theatre in its struggle to stay alive without many new shows on offer in the near future.
On Opening Night of the new MAMIL season, Mark Hadlow will be the MC of the Grand Opening of the new bicycle rack in front of the Theatre Royal, which was kindly installed by NCC.
Support your local theatre
Venues are the last ones to be able to open their doors after Covid-19 closures. Unfortunately, the Theatre Royal falls through the cracks of government relief funding for the arts.
To date, 32 shows have been cancelled, and 54 are postponed; some may not return until next year, or may cancel all together after all. There are a few local productions planned in the coming months, but touring shows are not expected to return to normal frequency until November at the earliest.
We hope you will be support the theatre by coming to our shows, and we look forward to seeing you soon.
