The Bicycle & the Butcher’s Daughter – A premiere play in Nelson’s newest theatre space

The Bicycle & the Butcher’s Daughter

With Helen Moulder

Directed by Sue Rider

SHOPFRONT THEATRE

105 Collingwood Street, Nelson

June/July/August 2020

A new play about family, food and five surprising characters!

One of NZ’s best-loved actors, Helen Moulder, presents the premiere season of her new solo play, The Bicycle & the Butcher’s Daughter, in rehearsal as well as in performance, in Nelson’s newest (temporary) performance space, Shopfront Theatre.

Shopfront Theatre has been created by Helen in an empty retail temporarily managed by Make/Shift Spaces. Make/Shift Spaces is part of a global movement to re-use, re-invigorate and re-present un-used spaces in our fast-changing urban environments. Make/Shift Spaces facilitates temporary takeovers of empty retail spaces, bringing life and creativity and stories to the inner city.

Directed by Sue Rider, The Bicycle & the Butcher’s Daughter showcases the talents of Helen throughout the rehearsal process (with Sue on Zoom from Australia), as well as a season of performances. This is Helen at her best: up-close, portraying multiple characters, with just a few trusty props, and the magic of the theatre.

The Bicycle & the Butcher’s Daughter is a funny and moving account of a family in crisis. Olivia Paterson is a high-powered executive at the peak of her career, running a large meat exporting company. Olivia wants to feed the world. But her daughter is a vegan, and her father wants things to stay as they are. So when Olivia’s business plans cause conflict within her family, what is more important – the company’s survival or her relationship with her daughter and her aging father?

The Bicycle & the Butcher’s Daughter is written by Helen Moulder and Sue Rider, the collaboration that brought Playing Miss Havisham, Gloria’s Handbag and Meeting Karpovsky.

With music by Beethoven, recorded by Richard Mapp (piano) and Juliet Ayre (violin).

Make/Shift Spaces is part of a global movement to re-use, re-invigorate and re-present empty spaces in our cities. We are revitalising Nelson’s vacant retail spaces by generating opportunities for artists, creatives, community and special interest groups who can fill a space with installations and activity. We’re also using some of the spaces to tell stories about our community, with window displays and images.
