Bistro 276 – a family owned dining experience like no other
Did you know that the word ‘Bistro’ originated from Russia? A popular folk etymology of the word claims that it originated among Russian troops who occupied Paris following the Napoleonic Wars (from быстро, “quickly”), which was allegedly shouted by Russian officers or Cossacks who wanted to be served quickly.
The modern Bistro has evolved well beyond just ‘speedy service’ into something so much more. It relates to a high level of quality, a warm inclusive feeling of family with great food and drink offerings making it an exceptional dining experience.
Bistro 276 is owned and operated by Peter and Janette Stevens. Previously it was called ‘Fords Restaurant’, and they rebranded it during lockdown to move away from fine dining to a family restaurant and provide better value for their customers. Dinner mains for as little as $20 with delicious fresh salads and their famous chowder.
“We still have our long term favourites, Fillet steak, Lamb, Pan-fried Market fish and more. There’s a private upstairs area for group bookings, birthday parties and outdoor seating to enjoy Nelson’s summer. We have a strong association with local suppliers and we’re are the only restaurant in Nelson with St Pauli wines – great wines with a fantastic story, well worth tasting! We’re open for breakfast lunch and dinner, Ask Amy about our express breakfast special for our local customers.” says Peter.
They have been the owners for 2 years and have put together a great team. Selecting the right people is key in maintaining quality customer service and they work together like a well-oiled machine.
Janette is the Chef and has 30 years of industry experience to draw from. She has worked as a head chef at some of Auckland’s best fine dining restaurants. Janette is passionate about food and providing the very best dining experience. She thrives in the rush during a busy service. When not in the Kitchen she is at home in the paddocks in Upper Moutere tending her large vegetable garden and working with the animals.
Peter spent 20 years in engineering management and is enjoying the challenge of hospitality, but does enjoy the trip home on his motorbike to unwind after a busy day. His family are from Golden Bay and he attended Nelson boys college back in the day.
Ameya is the Night service manager. He spent many years with P&O and brings a level of service to the restaurant rarely seen in Nelson. Ameya always has a smile and friendly welcome for our dinner customers. He brings extensive bar experience to the business as well – ask him to mix your favourite cocktail!
We recommend you try the Bistro 276 experience for yourself this summer!
