Sun Kissed Tan (SKT) first opened in May 2012, and quickly became the home of spray tanning in Christchurch. Since then, “SKT” has grown to include seven Canterbury locations, with stores in Nelson, Dunedin and Timaru all specializing in waxing, brow treatments and of course spray tans.
SKT Tanning & Beauty is the fastest-growing beauty brand in New Zealand with stores throughout the South Island. The Nelson salon was launched in December 2020 by SKT owner Matt Docherty, Nelson manager Sheena and her team of talented therapists.
Spray tanning is the latest in ‘tan-without-sun’ for the whole body. The purpose is to simulate a tan and replace conventional sunbathing by spraying the skin with a liquid that contains the natural sugar substance DHA. SKT uses MineTan professional spray tan products which are vegan-friendly, 100% free of alcohol and contain skin loving, PETA-approved ingredients that benefit the skin, including moisturizing antioxidants and oils like argan oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, coconut water, hemp seed oil and more. Each formula is free of parabens, contains 100% natural DHA and is vegan friendly with hydrating oils and other skin-loving ingredients to give you not just a tan, but a unique skin therapy experience. How does the treatment work?
Sheena explains:
“Once you are prepped and ready in our tanning booth, we use a handheld tanning machine with a nozzle that mists a fine layer of tanning solution through high pressure. The solution settles on the skin and develops over the next 1 – 8 hours depending on the result you are after, which we go over during your consultation at the time of your appointment. The treatment takes 10 minutes, with the option of a single or double coat depending on desired skin finish. For weddings or events where photos will be taken, we always recommend a double coat. It’s similar to nail polish in that one coat adds a little colour, but the second coat brings the best out of the colour and gives the smoothest finish. When you have finished spraying, the tan nozzle converts to a handheld air dryer and you are left to dry off and get dressed.
What are you wearing? As a customer, you can decide if you want to be completely without clothes or wear underwear, and we also stock disposable G strings and hairnets.
What are the benefits?
Spray tanning is one of the most efficient ways to tan, without the harmful effects of UV sun exposure and tanning beds. Skin that is overexposed to UV rays is far more prone to sunburn, skin conditions, premature aging, and skin cancer. While some sun exposure is required to provide us with Vitamin D, overexposure can be dangerous and while the effects of a sunburn may be felt immediately, long term damage such as pigmentation and melanomas may take years to appear. A spray tan gives you the colour you are looking for without risking damage to your skin. MineTan has a range of products that consider the undertone and condition of the skin so we can customise a tan according to the individual.
How long does it last? A treatment lasts up to 10 days with proper care. Your therapist will cover aftercare and tan maintenance at the time of your appointment.
“Our prices range between $20-27 for a full-body single coat tan and $30 – $37 for double coats. We also have Unlimited Tanning Packages that are 3, 6 or 9 month passes where you can come as often as you like, choose any tan and have either a double or single coat with no additional charge” says Sheena.
In addition to a fresh salon with friendly and knowledgeable staff, further treatments include full body waxing, lash and brow treatments including lash lifts and henna brows, and a selection of men’s grooming services. Lash lifts and henna brows have proven very popular at SKT. Often clients who have previously had lash extensions will try out a lash lift to boost their natural lashes, and henna brows can be a good option for people considering permanent makeup but want to see how a fuller brow would look on them before they commit. We see many clients who have over-tweezed their brows previously and with a little encouragement and careful shaping of the brow we start to see those fluffy baby hairs coming back and giving them a much fuller natural brow. Waxing at SKT is performed with the market’s leading products and all treatments are completed by our therapists who hold at the very minimum a Certificate in Beauty Therapy (NZ Standard or higher) and have undergone a rigorous recruitment process.
