Be Adult, Be you…
Not many people know but Be Adult has been in Nelson for over 16 years providing adult products and advice to people of all ages. Long gone are the days when it was not spoken about or even discussed between people or partners. It has become mainstream either in a shop or online and why shouldn’t it, we live in a more open and accepting society and long may it continue. Located just off Hardy Street, Kathy’s shop is open seven days a week, offering products for clients over the age of 18. Most of her business is walk-in but her online business is increasing. Kathy explained, “there is no age barrier as my clients range from 18 to 80 and are split, 50/50 male or female. This has changed over the years with more females coming into the shop, especially more woman bringing their partners with them.
Kathy has not always managed an adult shop, having worked in caregiving, rest homes, and home help, but an opportunity came when her friends were selling the business. There have been other adult shops in Nelson but have come and gone over the years. So, I asked her what her point of difference was, and she replied loudly, “me, I have customers that just pop in to say hello, see how I’m going. Interestingly, customers come back to thank me for helping them as it’s all about wellbeing and having a healthy relationship with your partner and yourself”
During Covid, Kathy’s online sales have increased. I asked why this is. “People have been stuck at home and actually getting to know each other again. People realise they want a little bit more fun, with most of my customers being couples. What has changed is that more and more women bring their male partner into the shop, women knowing what they want and why not. One of my biggest selling products is supplements due to stress or workloads, wanting to keep their relationship healthy, this is for both female and male”
Kathy loves being part of the business community in Nelson, having lived here all her life with Bed Bath & Beyond being her favourite shop and Miracle Restaurant for that Asia infused meal, with her partner of 29 years. Asked what she would do if she and her partner won Lotto “Our last holiday was Cook Islands two years ago so would love to revisit the beautiful islands again”.
