Matthews Eyewear was started in 1975 by Bill Matthews. His son Phillip and wife Lyn have since picked up the baton and they have stores in Nelson, Richmond, Motueka. Not to mention 17 other
stores nationwide!
It’s a family business and operates with good old family values like hard work, great relationships with the manufacturers and treating your staff and customers with love and respect. It’s like a tried and true formula that takes time to build but once it’s established it works well.
We spoke with Sue Martin, who is the practice manager for the Nelson store.
“I’ve been in the Eyecare game for over 16 years and have visited trade shows in Europe including meeting with our suppliers multiple times over the decades. It’s quite special to have that relationship with our suppliers who are the best in the world. Countries like Italy and France are world leaders in fashion and design, so we are directly in the loop with the latest fashions.”
“We can cater for the full range from low budget to high end. Our frames are made with the latest materials including, Stainless Steel, Beryllium, Titanium, Plastic, Alloy and Cellulose Acetate to name a few. There’s a lot of technology that we need to consider when assisting our customers.”
“We have 6 staff at our Nelson store and can do full eye testing and have the latest technology instore. Our team are passionate about Eyecare and are fully qualified to give quality advice and professional service.”
