2022 Waste Minimisation Grants Programme: Nelson City Council
Last year, Chia Sisters used a waste minimisation grant from Council to replace their plastic pallet wrap with reusable covers, saving four cubic metres of plastic wrap per year, and improving efficiency on the warehouse floor.
Nelson City Council’s waste minimisation grants are now open and offer up to $10,000 for businesses, community groups, iwi and schools to turn waste saving ideas into reality.

2022 Waste Minimisation Grants Programme
This is Nelson City Council’s main annual waste minimisation grant programme. This funding round will open 21 February 2022.
This is a contestable fund for grants up to $10,000 (minimum grant size $2,000 with a total of $40,000 available in this financial year). Applications are open from Monday 21 February to Thursday 31 March.
The purpose of these grants is to build capacity and leadership to keep waste out landfill through projects which reduce or avoid waste. Examples of suitable projects might include workshops and education programmes, materials and equipment and other costs to implement projects, or feasibility studies. We will consider both new projects, and opportunities to significantly extend or further develop existing projects beyond day to day ‘business as usual’.
Any application above the value of $5,000 is required to contact rethinkwaste@ncc.govt.nz to discuss their project before submitting and will be invited to make an oral presentation on their application if they wish.
Please carefully read the Rethink Waste applicant guidelines before applying (209KB PDF). The guidelines also detail the full criteria and exclusions for the grants programme. Our staff are happy to chat at any time if you have any questions or would like further understanding of the fund criteria or how to apply (email rethinkwaste@ncc.govt.nz).
