194 Eatery – the new trend in Nelson City
It’s a local success story that has overcome some tough times and is thriving. 194 Eatery is buzzing with happy customers and it’s on the main street in Nelson City. It’s exciting to see healthy food become so popular and as I glance around the room it’s filled with both young and older people loving the experience.
There are many styles of freshly made Sushi and a buffet with warm food. You can also enjoy a great coffee, juice or even a smoothie. It’s the ideal place to catch up with a friend, dine on the run or sit and enjoy a full meal and take your time.
First, they worked on Aki Sushi in Nelson, and with a very positive response, they opened another shop called Aki Sushi Richmond. The next step was opening Aki Kitchen in Richmond. It was a challenging time Im sure, as they were in the middle of the building phase when the pandemic lockdowns took place. However, their resilience won the battle and the business has been growing ever since.
“We took over a business called Aki Sushi Nelson in 2009. We chose to invest a lot into getting the restaurant looking and feeling right. We want our customers to feel comfortable and recharged after dining with us. The kitchen was custom designed so it works perfectly for us, and we can keep the food cabinets full during busy times. We are very passionate about supporting the local community and we source our ingredients from local suppliers.
The locals have been incredibly supportive and keep coming back and thanking us. We feel very honoured to be able to offer this service on the main street. It’s been a dream of mine for a long time. We need to be giving back to the community that has supported us every step of the way. We like to support local organisations as much as possible and contribute to fundraising events.” says Taewoo.
It is clear to me that the owners are genuinely lovely people and the staff are very professional, polite and have a joyful demeanour.
I chatted to Max, a young local who has worked in the Richmond venue previously and now works the front of house in Nelson, he says, “They are great to work for and look after us well.”
Taewoo has a young family and spends time in all of the different locations but loves watching locals enjoy the food and seeing his parents’ dream continue.
Google reviews are an accurate representation of what the locals are saying. They have a 4.9/5 star average and loads of positive comments. Like this one below.
“The spicy Chicken Donburi is the best meal I have ever had anywhere. I go there every weekend and the wife and kids absolutely love it as well. They have a great selection of sushi and we are never disappointed. Highly recommend!” – Mike
If you are in town and feel the hunger signs it’s highly recommended you drop in and see what the fuss is all about.
