Lots of things have changed in the motor industry over the past few decades, however, one thing remains the same… if your car breaks down its very difficult to go about your daily activities as the household car is such a huge part of our lives in Nelson.
Formally known as Dollar Save Auto, they have been serving local motorists since 1993. Recently they have done a full rebrand, with fresh paint and they’ve invested in some new technology in the workshop.
It’s a family business that has built up a top reputation in the Nelson region. Derryl’s dad was in the motor vehicle business, which inspired him to complete his motor mechanic apprenticeship at Ross McCully Motors in Richmond. After a few years, as many of our young people do, expanded his horizons and worked in Brisbane, Australia.
“I moved over there with my brother and worked for the house of MG, and that’s where my passion for classic cars began. I love the way they look and feel. It’s a work of art the way they design and build them, and I still love the way the American and European cars drive on the road.” says Derryl.
“With our son Tom joining the business as an Auto Technician, he’s helping drive things in a new direction. Tom flies to the USA to buy cars and ships them back to the workshop. After hours he is busy rebuilding a Blue 1961 Mini Cooper which is his pride and joy.”
Life is busy on-site as Derryl’s wife Tanja manages their WOF testing service. There’s a lot to organise with following up with our customers when their warrant of fitness is due for renewal and booking in time slots. It’s that good old-fashioned customer service that runs through the business and keeps locals coming back every time.
You will see they have caravans for sale, and they have sold many over the past year. Due to travel restrictions, kiwis are exploring their own back yard and good caravans are hard to come by. It’s solving a problem for locals who love getting away and following the road on a camping adventure.

“The mindset we have always had since day one is to offer multiple options for transportation needs. We love the variety of customers and since we have been in the same location for the past 30 years we have made many friends along the way. Keeping the business in the family is something we are very proud of as it’s a rare thing these days.”
