Sailability Nelson
Two of our sailors and their companions (coaches) sailed in the annual NELSON YACHT CLUB’s Wakatu Regatta over the weekend. This is the first time our Sailability group have been included in a local mainstream event.
The group competed in our specially designed Hansa 303 yachts that have special features such as a lead weighted centreboard that prevents them from capsizing and sails that furl. However, this was never a problem over the weekend as the weather was typical Nelson summer conditions with a gentle sea breeze.
The Regatta for our fleet consisted of five races inside the Harbour and a sixth race “Around the Island” (Haulashore), over two days.
Racing was competitive and close with Hansa ORANGE narrowly beating Hansa RED
The highlight of the Regatta for the group was sailing their yachts around the Island and outside the Harbour, a first as all our Sunday sailing is within the inner harbour.
Nelson Sailability Trust is hoping that with another Hansa yacht, we will be able to have more of our group participate in this annual event as the experience is invaluable in building their skills and confidence.
Special thanks go to the Nelson Yacht Club and Regatta organisers and the Race Officer for including our group.
