Mariposa – A sea of vibrant colours right in the heart of Nelson City
Its bright and cheerful colours draw you in. This store has something to offer everyone from quality clothing, footwear, jewellery and gifts. The style can be described as Ethnic / Urban / Streetwear.
The name Mariposa means Butterfly in Spanish.
“It’s seriously Funky Clothing, Footwear and Jewellery for Men, Women and Children.”
It’s been an eighteen-year journey plus a lot of hard work by the owner, Tracey, and the team, consisting of 22 staff in total. Fueled by a genuine passion to showcase unique and top-quality products for the people in Nelson and Golden Bay, there are now seven stores and a long list of happy customers. It’s really an institution in these parts, and the layouts and vibe are eye-catching and refreshing.
Tracey was born in Australia and grew up in Auckland, when she travelled to America on her O.E she met her soulmate in Austin, Texas. They started an import business in the States and decided to move to Golden Bay, where the first Mariposa shop opened in Takaka. Austin is keen on the outdoors lifestyle, so it was a perfect fit for them both.
“I started with a small shop with some clothing, shoes and a small collection of jewellery. As we grew, we needed to be able to increase our range and storage space. All our stores use a clever online stock management system, which allows us to see if a special item, size or colour is available in another store in real time.” says Tracey.
There is certainly a Nelson/Golden Bay flavour to this shop. If you are visiting the region and are looking for gifts for any age – you will find it here. Kids shoes are super cute, home decor items that make great gifts and the staff are friendly and great with customers.
“We have a great range of Crocs, which are popular with the recent fashion trend taking off. Some of our shoes are made using recycled materials and they look and feel amazing. Many of our customers love the brands we stock and the sustainable aspect; not only buying footwear made from recycled materials, but quality products that last for years. Like the Dr Martins – just to name one of the many brands we stock.”
They now have The Emporium outlet store in Morrisons square, which features end of line discounted items. Customers love to discover a bargain. Tracey owns three shops in Nelson City, of which Mariposa is the clothing store, Soul is focused on their footwear range and Dragonfly showcasing divine jewellery and a heavenly gift selection.
The Nelson stores have been in Hardy Street since 2008. Tracey spends time in all the different stores and their website has been reaching customers from outside the region.
“It’s been a very challenging time with Covid lockdowns, and the cost-of-living situation, however we remain positive and optimistic. We believe in our products and our customers have kept supporting us despite the challenges.”
