Nelson’s Winter Highlight Of The Year: Te Ramaroa, Kicks Off This Friday
Come out! Come out to see the lights!
This really is the best way to enjoy our own Nelson city, as a wondrous, twinkling, awe-inspiring, winter wonderland of nighttime projections and illuminations.
Te Ramaroa is a free event that is truly special to Nelson Whakatū. In 2023 we have more than 40 installations, created by a whole range of people – from primary school kids, artists, community groups, architects, scientists, and dentists (true!). We also have some of the country’s top light-installation designers, bringing their creations to brighten up our city streets, laneways and gardens.
This year, we’re spread across the city centre – in upper Trafalgar St, around the Cathedral, Hardy & Bridge Sts, Morrison Square, NMIT, Albion Square and Queens Gardens. We have the Food Hub in Kirby Lane, and the Community Stage on Trafalgar St (near the Museum) with a stellar line-up of local talent. There’s also some performances at Cultural Conversation in Morrison Square and near the Church Steps. Have a look at the map, and maybe plan to come a couple of nights if you can. There’s heaps to see!
We have installations on every scale, from tiny discoveries through to massive projections on the Cathedral and the Nelson Mail building in Bridge St. Te Ramaroa is a five-night celebration of our community, our place, and the way light can illuminate, transform, and make a winter’s night a whole lot more magical.
Many of us have favourite installations from over the years. We hope that 2023 will be the year for a whole new suite of favourites, especially for anyone coming along for the first time – how exciting!
Remember to wrap up in your warmest hat, gloves and scarves, get ready to be bedazzled, and look out for Luma and Elec!
