You won’t want to miss this year’s Matariki Festival, Te Hihi-o-Matariki!
In addition to performances by special guests Modern Māori Quartet Maaka Fiso and Awhimai Fraser we’re thrilled to be able to include Taka Kara Tīpuna (Regional Secondary School Kapa Haka Competition), making for an event not to be missed this winter.
Come and join us on Friday 14 July Trafalgar Centre and Rutherford Park
9am – 3pm: Taka Kara Tīpuna, the Regional Secondary School Kapa Haka Competition (tickets can be purchased from Eventbrite).
5pm – 9pm: Matariki Market offers a diverse range of food as well as Māori arts and crafts for sale.
5pm – 9pm: Evening entertainment including special guests. (Koha will be collected on entry, and this will be donated to a local charity)
*There will be no access to cash withdrawals onsite and limited access for Eftpos transactions, so please bring cash.

Nelson City Council is hosting the Matariki Festival, Te Huihui-o-Matariki 2023 in collaboration with Te Tauihu o Te Waka-a-Maui Māori Culture Council and Te Kotahi o Te Tauihu Charitable Trust.
This year’s event will kickoff with Taka Kara Tīpuna, the Regional Secondary School Kapa Haka Competitions from 9am – 3pm. Tickets can be purchased from Eventbrite.
The Matariki Market will open from 5pm – 9pm, offering a diverse range of food as well as Māori arts and crafts for sale.
Performances by special guests Maaka Fiso, Awhimai Fraser, the Modern Māori Quartet and more will begin at 5pm and the evening’s entertainment will conclude at 9pm. Koha will be collected on entry, and this will be donated to a local charity.
Among the performers in the Taka Kara Tīpuna are Pūaha Te Tai (Nayland College), Ngā Aho Rau (Nelson College for Boys and Nelson College for Girls), Ngā Taiohi o Wairau Kapahaka (Marlborough Girls’ College and Marlborough Boys’ College, Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Tuia te Matangi, Te Mātū (Motueka High School) and Tapawera Area School.
