A collection of Matariki stars, lovingly crafted by our children, outside The Suter’s education room
We are excited to showcase a collection of Matariki stars, lovingly crafted by our children, outside The Suter’s education room. This exhibition runs until Sunday 23 July.
Matariki, the Māori New Year, is a time to remember the past, honour the cycle of life, and welcome new beginnings. In earlier times, Matariki celebrations were a vibrant part of Aotearoa’s culture, marked with festivities, kite flying, and the sharing of tribal knowledge. Today, we revive these traditions and embrace the beauty of Matariki.
Our after-school art classes at The Suter have been inspired by this celestial event, and our students have created their own whetu (stars) using clay. Each star bears a unique stamp, representing the hopes and dreams of our young artists for the coming year. These artworks truly reflect their heartfelt aspirations.
Also on view is our collection exhibition Night Life, which features some loaned artworks, and celebrates some of the diverse interpretations and treatments of the night. Artists include Hannah Beehre, Barry Cleavin, Niki Hastings-McFall, Robin Slow, Colin McCahon, and Michael Dell. The night can offer much to the wondering mind, heart, and eyes, such as its enveloping dark tones, and metaphorical, scientific, and spiritual meanings.
