New EV dealership on the way for The Car Company
It’s demolition time down at The Car Company, with contractors making way for a brand-new showroom.
The iconic, locally owned business is upgrading the dealership for a very special reason. With three sites – 202 Rutherford St, Haven Road and Tahunanui currently focussed on new and used vehicle sales, the 150 Rutherford premises are home exclusively to all BYD electric vehicles.
The new site is a must-have because as of August 3rd, 2023, The Car Company has been appointed as the official BYD dealer for the top of the south region. Having a dedicated showroom for BYD means the community can visit a one-stop shop and access a global leader in EVs, featuring the most cutting-edge technology.

The newly built dealership will be ready in early 2024, but the BYD ATTO 3 and BYD DOLPHIN are available exclusively now, with the next lineup of models becoming available soon.Whilst the demand for EVs in Nelson Tasman is certainly growing, customers can rest assured that The Car Company continues to offer an extensive range of makes and models at its other branches. With literally hundreds of cars in stock, there is something for everyone.

The Car Company was founded by Shane and his wife Sarah. Ben Brownie and his wife Wendy are also shareholders and together they have over 25 staff, 500 vehicles in stock at all times and well over 30,000 cars sold.
Whilst they are hugely successful after 27 years of being locally owned and operated, Shane and the team have earned a great amount of respect and trust in the community. They have formed strong ties with local groups and organisations, which they like to nurture through many sponsorships every year. From local sports teams to charity events, they are passionate about giving back to local people.
One of their most renowned charity ventures is their annual fundraiser for the Nelson Women’s and Children’s Refuge. Every year for one whole month they donate $50 for every vehicle sale, since 2011 they have raised over $100,000 for this service.
