Tucked up inside our meerkat den are five little babies: Natureland Wildlife Trust
We’ve been keeping a little secret. Tucked up inside our meerkat den are five little babies! The cubs are now two weeks old, their eyes and ears are open and they are starting to explore. Meerkat cubs usually stay inside their den for three weeks, so we expect them to start making an appearance outside from next week onwards.
After a ten week pregnancy, meerkats usually have three to four babies at a time. Jooby and Gamba are first time parents and certainly have their paws full with FIVE little ones! Both parents are involved in the rearing with dad, Gamba, doing a stellar job guarding the cubs while mum, Jooby, has breaks and searches for food.
In about a week, we will being completing a full health check on the babies and discovering how many are males and females. Jooby and Gamba are currently the only breeding pair in New Zealand, making this birth even more exciting.
We will be holding a naming competition shortly with the winners recieving a meerkat experience! Follow our page for more updates.
