Two Thumb Brewery Nelson – where there’s always something happening
Two Thumb Brewery in Nelson has been a hive of activity since the grand opening a year ago. The venue was formerly called ‘The Workshop’ and the grand opening pulled a spectacular crowd of beer-loving locals who were excited to be part of the action.
With Latin or Swing dancing in the staged area most Wednesdays, Charity Bingo & Games nights on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and then live music gigs on the weekends – it’s never boring!
It’s a colourful, industrial, relaxed and inviting space that feels like you are entering another world when you come in. Classy-looking event posters showing what’s on and retro tables of all sizes to suit individuals or groups. Not to mention the crackling fire that fuels the vibe during the cooler months.
“Breweries in Europe like ours work hard to embrace the local community. It’s like a hub or a meeting place where they can provide a space for the locals and bring people together. Beer isn’t the main focus. However, having a selection of top-quality beers is a great bonus.” says Jeff
Jeff and the team have been working very hard and enjoy listening to the locals about what they want to see. They are optimistic that the Two Thumb venture is evolving nicely.
“It’s not easy establishing a new hospitality venue in Nelson as it takes time to get used to the local patterns. Most people who work in the local hospitality sector will agree on some days when you don’t anticipate being busy – it gets packed, and visa versa. It takes a while to tune in and learn what people are looking for in this town. Our point of difference is that we have a wide range of group activities, live music gigs and events happening consistently. We are located off the beaten track, so when our customers arrive they can easily see what we have coming up.
The venue can hold 120 people seated and more if standing. The outdoor area is lovely on a sunny day and holds over 70 people. We are fortunate to be able to use the decking area next door outside our Sublime Coffee neighbours – since they work till 3 pm most days. There are painted lines where our licensed area ends so it’s easy for all to see the boundary.”
Jeff is an experienced chef who loves a good challenge. He’s worked at some of the finest restaurants in Denmark, and more recently at the Rutherford Hotel Nelson. He has 3 – 4 staff on his team and there’s a friendly/professional vibe emitted amongst them.
“Our goal is to make everyone who comes in our door feel welcome and relaxed. The retro tables and chairs are easily rearranged to suit any group size. This non-formulaic layout helps make you feel at home. It’s just one of the small things that makes a big difference to the look and feel of the space.”
How many venues in Nelson do you know who actively cater for charity groups? This might be the local Mountain Biking Club monthly meetings, or hosting a local Football team who don’t have a clubroom for socialising after a game. It could be a group of parents who need to fundraise for an overseas school sports trip. The options are endless.
Jeff and the team are very approachable and open to hosting your fundraising gatherings be it quiz night or bingo and they have loads of good ideas. The venue is free and it’s a creative way to help the locals. The kitchen puts out great meals, such as burgers and pizzas. The reputation is getting out there as Nelson is enjoying the Two Thumb journey.
Two Thumb brews their beers in Christchurch and has created a top-quality range of beers for the discerning beer lover. There are some fun names like ‘Lighter Shade of Pale’ or ‘Haze there Delilah’ and many more. They also have a range of tasty non-alcoholic beverages too.
One thing is for certain, Two Thumbs is a hit with the locals and is a great place to consider if you are meeting friends after work or have family visiting for the weekend.
