NMIT’s hairdressing programme given an exciting glow-up
A new, unified Level 3 Hairdressing programme has been rolled out across all of New Zealand’s Industry Training Providers. Thanks to input from expert tutors like NMIT’s Paula Canning, the updated programme ensures the same high standard of curriculum is delivered wherever learners choose to go.
This nationwide consistency provides ākonga (students) with confidence in the skills they are being taught and offers better sharing of resources and ideas.
Paula Canning, Hairdressing tutor at NMIT, was involved in designing the new unified programme and is excited about how ‘action-packed’ it is.
“This collaborative initiative has been developed by leveraging the expertise and skills of tutors and stakeholders nationwide,” she says.
“It ensures we meet the needs of diverse learners and is well-suited for our evolving industry.”
Practical skills such as shampooing and treatments, styling, blow drying, hair ups, cuts, colour, and foiling are all taught within the eight papers. Learners can practice in the NMIT training salon, Hair Zone, which is open for clients every Tuesday from 1pm – 7pm.
With a hands-on focus, graduates of the hairdressing programme at NMIT can confidently enter the workforce having experienced real-world scenarios in the training salon.
Their qualifications alongside these solid foundational skills set them up for a rewarding career that can take them around the world.
“NMIT offers a dynamic environment where learners can work directly with clients, concentrating exclusively on developing and honing their practical skills in a commercial salon setting,” Paula says.
“The tutors possess expert knowledge and skills to guide you towards an exciting career.”
