Nelson Provincial Museum is excited to announce our upcoming exhibition ‘Te Tuhi o te Whenua: Pakohe Unearthed’. Opening on Saturday 22nd June, this significant exhibition is being curated in partnership with Ngāti Kuia and in collaboration with ngā iwi o Te Tauihu.
Pakohe, which is argillite that has undergone a process of metasomatism, has been used by iwi Māori for centuries in the production of tools, adornments and artworks. From the mountains to the coast, this beautiful taonga ripples through the waters, lands and lives of our region. This captivating exhibition will bring to light the rich history and bright future of pakohe in Te Tauihu.
