Welcome to July: Health 2000 (Nelson)
Welcome to July! We’re into the second half of the year and in the depths of the NZ winter.
With shorter daylight hours and less sunshine in our days, you might be feeling what people call “the winter blues.” This could actually be Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) which causes fatigue, low energy, difficulty concentrating, changes in appetite, and feelings of sadness. The cause of SAD is believed to be related to less sunshine which can disrupt your body’s internal clock and levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that influences your mood.
If you’re feeling less vibrant than usual, don’t worry – there are nutritional changes that can help! Increasing your intake of foods rich in omega 3 fatty acids can support brain health, while having complex carbohydrates like whole grains can boost serotonin levels. Additionally, ensuring you get enough vitamin D through fortified foods or supplements can help compensate for less sunshine. If you feel like your mental health is really struggling, please make sure you reach out to your doctor or other professional for support.
