Russells Curtains & Blinds – A Legacy of Family, Expansion, and Innovation

Russells Curtains & Blinds, a staple in New Zealand’s soft furnishings industry, owes its success to the collaborative efforts of the Liddell family and their unwavering dedication. Bill and Jenny Liddell have both been instrumental in steering the company from a small operation to a nationwide leader. It’s the combined efforts of Bill, and his wife Jenny and now their son Troy and his wife Jess and their daughter Cherie Liddell, that have truly driven the company’s remarkable growth and innovation.

The journey began in 2003 when Bill and Jenny acquired Russells Curtains & Blinds. At the time, the company was a modest operation with around 15 staff members, primarily servicing Nelson, Tasman & Blenheim. Under the Liddell family’s leadership, the business rapidly expanded its reach. “We had to reset the operations initially, including our presence in the West Coast” Bill explains. From there, the company extended its footprint to Christchurch and gradually covered the entire South Island, followed by Wellington, Palmerston North, Hawke’s Bay, Taranaki, Hamilton, Auckland, and even Northland.

Today, Russells Curtains & Blinds is a nationwide operation, a testament to the family’s strategic vision and perseverance. “Perseverance has been key. We’ve had our knockbacks, but we always pushed through,” Bill emphasises.

One of the secrets to the company’s success has been its operational innovations. Russells maintains its own sewing room and blind factory, allowing it to produce its own products and maintain control over quality. “We’ve been able to produce our own products, which has helped tremendously,” Bill says.

The company’s flexibility is also a significant factor. With 38 consultants operating out of mobile offices, Russells can bring its products and services directly to customers’ homes. “We’ve never deviated from the fact that it’s a mobile business,” Bill states.

The involvement of family members has been crucial to the business’s success. When Jenny faced health challenges, their son, Troy and his wife Jess, stepped up to help. “Troy worked the sewing room side of the business, and Jess followed,” Bill explains. Today, Troy oversees all manufacturing, including the sewing room and blind factory, while Jess, who has learned every process in the business, serves as the CFO. Their daughter Cherie Liddell is a sales consultant in the Nelson/Tasman region.

Jessica Liddell, Troy’s wife, is an integral part of the family business. Originally from Colombia, Jessica met Troy in London at a young age. “I never imagined I’d be involved in this kind of business,” Jessica admits. Starting with basic administrative roles, Jessica quickly learned every aspect of the company. This comprehensive understanding has been crucial in her role as CFO, where she oversees all financial aspects of the business. “Jessica rules with an iron fist,” Bill jokes.

Jessica’s brothers have also joined the business, each playing vital roles. One brother manages stock and purchasing for fabrics, while the other works in the factory. “It’s a family affair, and we all support each other,” Jessica says proudly.

Embracing technology has been another critical factor in Russells’ success. In 2015, the company launched its website, Bargain Blinds and Curtains, as an extension of Russells Curtains. “Our website costs us the same as a top employee, and we invest heavily in it every year,” Bill explains. The online portal offers both ready-made and custom-made products, providing customers with a convenient shopping experience.

The company is even exploring AI to enhance its operations further. “Business is always evolving, and if you aren’t prepared to evolve, then you’re not going to go anywhere these days,” Bill says. This forward-thinking approach ensures Russells stays at the forefront of the industry.

Like any business, Russells Curtains & Blinds has faced its share of challenges. The current economic climate and retaining skilled sales staff are among the most pressing issues. “Retaining sales staff is not easy; it’s quite a technical job,” Bill admits. However, the company has implemented new interview processes and support structures to address these challenges.

Despite the hurdles, the Liddell family finds great satisfaction in their work. “I love working with the family, and we get on pretty damn well,” Bill says. This strong family bond has been a cornerstone of the company’s success.

Looking ahead, the Liddell family is optimistic about the future. “We have a plan for the future, and we drive with big, hairy, audacious goals,” Bill states. With the family deeply involved in the business, they are confident that Russells Curtains & Blinds will continue to thrive.

Reflecting on their journey, the family remains humble and grateful. “We’ve been on our knees, up to our noses in quicksand, but you just have to fight on,” Bill says. Their story is a testament to the power of perseverance, family support, and a relentless drive to achieve one’s dreams.

Russells Curtains & Blinds is more than just a business; it’s a family legacy built on determination, innovation, and a shared vision for success. Under the combined leadership of Bill, Jenny, Troy, Jessica, the company has grown from a small operation to a major player in the industry. As they continue to embrace new technologies and expand their reach, the Liddell family is well-positioned to ensure the continued success of Russells Curtains & Blinds for generations to come.
