Mid-August news from Wall to Wall Art

Watchful in Sepia, by Mary-Jane Steffens.

Storytime, by Mary-Jane Steffens

Works in my ‘In Sepia’ series are all mixed media using gouache, acrylic and soft pastel on pine wood panels. These works embrace the rough texture and imperfections created by the gouache and acrylic markings. Using a limited colour palette based around sepia tones to capture the play between light and shadow around a lovely face, creating different moods. And all highlighted by expressive big halo-like hair.

My other works on display are pastel portraits that are intimate, sweet and furry. They are also there to show the kind of portraits I do for those lovely people that would like to commission a portrait of their favourite person(s) or pet(s).

Seeking a sign

Sue Birchfield was happy to see the new sign.

Not everyone who uses Buxton Square knows that Wall to Wall Art Gallery has an entrance on that side.

This new sign was recently put in place, just through the sliding doors that are flanked by Aboki Hair’s two rooms.

When not admiring the new sign, Sue has been busy with new work, including this evocative painting of Milford Sound.

Plans for Clay Week
Clay Week brings guest tutors from all around the country as well as from overseas for the week beginning Saturday, September 28. A major exhibition at the Refinery Gallery – Pushing Clay – offers $10,000 of prize money.

At Wall to Wall, we have the two US guest tutors, Jack Troy and Hamish Jackson. They’ll have a small exhibition of their work on show for the week. At 5.30pm on the Wednesday night, we’ll host the pair as they talk about their work. This occasion will be open to all.

Inside Wall to Wall, our resident potter, Peter Gibbs, will feature new work, including porcelain, on the Feature Artist wall near the front door

Gill Saunders has the guest space at the rear of the gallery, during September, so will be there at the start of Clay Week, with Peter taking over on Tuesday October 1 showing larger stoneware works.

Plenty to look forward to.

There are still guest spots available in the gallery for October, giving artists the enhanced exposure that Clay Week will bring. It’ll be a busy period, so if you’re interested in securing one of these spaces, call in for a chat.

Alternatively, you can call Virginia Watson (021 0263 9548).
