Waahi Taakaro Golf Club: Nelson’s Best-Kept Secret

Waahi Taakaro Golf Club is a hidden gem nestled in the hills of Nelson, New Zealand. The club boasts a unique blend of stunning natural scenery and accessible, affordable golf. With a history steeped in tradition and a growing reputation as Nelson’s best-kept secret, Waahi Taakaro offers a unique golfing experience that draws players from all walks of life.

The course itself is both charming and challenging. Although it’s technically a nine-hole course, there are 18 different tee placements, making each hole distinct. As Club Manager Tony Lewis explains, “The placement of the tees makes each hole feel like a completely different experience. It’s not just a nine-hole course – it’s 18 very different and unique holes, which gives players the sensation of playing a full course.” This dynamic layout is one of the club’s standout features, allowing golfers to test their skills in a variety of ways while surrounded by some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the region.

Waahi Taakaro is not just a place to play golf; it’s a community hub. “We pride ourselves on the welcoming atmosphere here,” says Tony. “Our members are incredibly supportive, whether you’re a seasoned golfer or picking up a club for the first time. We want everyone who comes here to feel at home.”

Tony’s journey to becoming the manager of Waahi Taakaro Golf Club was somewhat oportunistic. “I wasn’t looking for a full-time role,” he recalls. “I was playing a round of golf with a few mates, and they kept nudging me to apply for the manager position. At first, I wasn’t sure, but after a chat with the committee, I realised it was the perfect fit.” Before long, Tony was managing the club, bringing with him a wealth of experience including his time as CEO of the Tasman Rugby Union and his work with the Western Force in Perth.

One of Tony’s key focuses has been fostering a strong relationship with the Nelson City Council, ensuring the club’s financial sustainability and the maintenance of the course. “We work closely with the council to keep the course in top shape,” Tony notes. “This partnership is crucial because, as a council-owned course, we rely on their support to keep things running smoothly.”

The club’s affordability is another major drawcard. “In these tough financial times, we’re proud to offer some of the most affordable green fees around,” says Tony. “For as little as $18, you can play a round of golf. It’s not just about making golf accessible – it’s about offering great value in one of the most beautiful settings in New Zealand.” The club’s commitment to affordability extends to its membership options, with discounted rates available for juniors, women, and older players.

The natural beauty of Waahi Taakaro Golf Club is a major selling point. The course is set amidst lush native vegetation, with the gentle hum of the nearby Maitai River providing a serene backdrop to a round of golf. “It’s a stunning spot,” Tony says. “You’ve got the hills, the trees, and the river. It’s hard to imagine a more peaceful place to play golf.” The river plays a role in the course design as well, with golfers needing to hit over it on two holes, adding an extra layer of challenge to the game.

In addition to its picturesque course, the club also boasts a versatile clubhouse. “We’ve hosted everything from weddings to funerals here,” says Tony. “It’s a great space for events, and we’re always happy to welcome the local community.” The clubhouse has even caught the attention of local businesses, with Nelson City Council and other organisations using it for leadership retreats and team-building exercises.

Looking to the future, Tony is focused on growing the club’s membership and increasing its visibility within the region. He’s also passionate about encouraging a diverse range of players to take up the game. “We have a great mix of people here,” he explains. “It’s one of the few clubs where you’ll find a large number of Māori, Pasifika, and women playing regularly. We’re really proud of that, and we want to keep building on it.”

For Tony, the most rewarding part of his role is the chance to interact with the club’s members and visitors. “I love being here, talking to people, and seeing them enjoy the game. Whether it’s a seasoned golfer or someone playing their first round, there’s something special about this place that keeps people coming back.”

In a city known for its stunning natural beauty, Waahi Taakaro Golf Club stands out as a truly unique and affordable destination. The club is poised to continue its growth, offering Nelsonians and visitors alike a welcoming place to play, relax, and enjoy the sport of golf. “This really is Nelson’s best-kept secret,” Tony says with a smile. “But not for long – we’re ready to share it with everyone.”
