Festival fun brings out the crowds

It was a weekend of sun, sea and cider that showed off Nelson at its colourful best.

On Friday night, the Nelson Arts Festival Mask Parade wound through city streets to a samba beat, followed by the Carnivale street party with musicians playing into the night.

The curtains came down on the 30th anniversary of the arts festival on Sunday, after 11 days of exhibitions, theatre, literary talks, free community events, music and comedy.

On Saturday in the sun at Founders Park hundreds enjoyed an array of ciders from around the country at the New Zealand Cider Festival.

As well as more than 80 ciders, the festival featured a line-up of live music, food trucks, local beer and wine and cider workshops with industry professionals.

On Saturday and Sunday, the Nelson Marine Safety Expo at the Port Nelson marina provided boaties with checks, information and demonstrations for the summer season on the water.

On Saturday night the Wakefield School twilight gala drew visitors from around the region and on Sunday the St Joseph’s School gala enjoyed perfect conditions. The dunk-a-teacher and chocolate wheel were among the stalls drawing plenty of interest.
