The Shared Communities Art Mural

This Community Art Mural is a project that was born from the Shared Communities Initiative, a collaboration between Multicultural Nelson Tasman, Arts Council Nelson, Make Shift Spaces, and Nelson City Council.

One of the key aims of this initiative is to enhance the well-being of our migrant and former refugee communities by facilitating community led accessible art, culture, and heritage activities in the region.

With the support of the Shared Communities Cultural Navigator, this mural brought together people from different cultural backgrounds to create something meaningful for our community and our city. It serves to help people feel represented, included and raise awareness of Nelson’s growing cultural diversity.

The mural features the words “Thanks/Thank you” in the many languages spoken by those involved in its creation, as well as those engaged with previous projects.

By including these languages, we express our deep gratitude to all the people from various cultural backgrounds who call Nelson home. Their presence and contributions enrich our community and help build a more vibrant and stronger city. Some of the languages represented in the mural include:

Afrikaans, Arabic, Bahasa, Bhutanese, Bislama, Burmese, Chin Hakha, Czech, Dari, Dutch, English, Farsi, Fijian, French, German, Gujarati, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Kayah, Khmer, Korean, Malay, Mandarin, Nepali, Niuean, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Samoan, Sanskrit, Sinhalese, Spanish, Swahili, Tamil, Tagalog, Tedim, Te Reo Māori, Thai, Tongan, Turkish, Ukrainian, Urdu, Vietnamese.

Throughout the creation of this mural, volunteers came together with an eagerness to connect and share their experiences. The project has not only created opportunities for emerging artists but also fostered new friendships, bringing people closer together and strengthening our community bonds.

This mural is a testament to the collective effort that went into its creation. We extend heartfelt thanks to our sponsors, funders, and incredible volunteers for their dedicated engagement and support—this has truly been a team effort.
