Welcome Myles Payne, NCMA’s New Director!
In December we bid farewell to James Donaldson after seven years as Director. During his time at the Nelson Centre of Musical Arts (NCMA), James oversaw a period of growth and change, which he described as “both challenging and invigorating.”
As he heads to Hawaii for his next chapter, we thank him for his mahi and wish him well in his future endeavours.
We are thrilled to announce the appointment of Myles Payne as the new Director. With over 25 years of experience in music education and a dedication to fostering musical talent, Myles brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to NCMA.
“As part of the staff succession plan, it was always intended that the existing Education Manager, Myles Payne, would now assume the Director’s position. Myles has now had almost two years at NCMA as Education Manager, doing an outstanding job.” – Jan Trayes, Chair
Myles holds a Bachelor of Music degree from The University of Birmingham and has an extensive teaching background, having served at institutions such as Thomas Telford City Technology College in the UK, Newlands College in Wellington, and notably, a decade as Head of Music at Nelson College for Girls.
An accomplished musician, Myles is a member of the Nelson Symphony Orchestra, where he leads the viola section. His passion for teaching spans instruments including viola, violin, and piano, as well as comprehensive instruction in music theory and NCEA composition. Myles is committed to creating a positive and inclusive learning environment, empowering students of all levels to explore and develop their musical talents.
“Nelson’s musical community is something truly special, and I’m excited to take on this role at NCMA. Having made this place my home, I have no intention of leaving, and I understand how important NCMA is to so many. I look forward to supporting its growth and ensuring its continued success.” – Myles
While Myles prefers to focus on behind-the-scenes work, he recognises the importance of being visible and approachable. He will introduce the occasional lunchtime concert and speak at key events when needed, but he is not one to seek the spotlight. His priority is to support NCMA’s growth and ensure it thrives while preserving the welcoming, community-focused atmosphere that defines the centre.
Please join us in welcoming Myles to NCMA. We are excited about the future under his leadership and look forward to the continued growth and success of the Nelson Centre of Musical Arts.
