Piers Lane Nocturnes
Australian, London-based pianist Piers Lane returns to New Zealand to perform the complete cycle of Frédéric Chopin’s beloved nocturnes.
The 21 nocturnes are among Chopin’s most intimate compositions, suggestive of a myriad of nighttime atmospheres and emotions.
Of twilight, dusk and into the dark night. Of contemplation, serenity, melancholy, drama, and joy. They are each elegantly drawn and sensuously beautiful.
The first nocturne was composed when Chopin was 17, and with the final nocturne being composed just three years before his death at age 39, additional associative emotions can be imagined. “No praise could be high enough for Piers Lane whose playing throughout is of a superb musical intelligence, sensitivity, and scintillating brilliance.” Bryce Morrison, Gramophone.
Lunchtime Concert: Midnight Swim
Fresh from Opera in the Park, Midnight Swim joins the Summer Season of Lunchtime Concerts.
Nelson-based Midnight Swim formed in 2021 and is made up of good friends who love playing music together. The group features five vocalists—Lydia Stallard, Rachel Pemberton, Emily Wragg, Susy Peddie, and Evie Rainey—and guitarist Dunstan Blay.
Their sound blends traditional folk, classic tunes, contemporary hits and original songs, interwoven with lush harmonies, violin and the occasional tambourine.
Inspired by artists like Kate Bush, Leonard Cohen and Dolly Parton, Midnight Swim brings a fresh, folky twist to each piece.
Midnight Swim look forward to bringing you this lunchtime concert. BOOK NOW
Michael Houstoun Solo Piano
Michael Houstoun returns to Nelson to perform a beautiful programme of piano masterpieces by Franz Schubert and George Gershwin.
As well as the Four Impromptus, Op.90 by Schubert Houstoun will present his final sonata, the Sonata in B flat, D.960. Houstoun describes this sonata as “a spiritual document without parallel showing us the depths of our own hearts”.
The concert also includes four of the Virtuoso Studies on Gershwin by the brilliant American pianist Earl Wild. Wild has arranged some of George Gershwin’s most famous and loved songs for solo piano and Houstoun will play Lady Be Good, The Man I Love, I Got Rhythm and Embraceable You.
As Houstoun says “the tunes are great and Wild does not bury them or turn them upside down – he honours them and shows off the piano at the same time. Truly a pleasure to play”. BOOK NOW
