Wall to Wall Art April newsletter

Now that autumn is upon us, it’s time to cosy up with a glass of wine and take a look at what’s on at the gallery, including the work of four fine guest artists, Ana Burne, Emily Lake, Helen Coombs and Andrew Leck.
You can meet these guests and other members of the Wall to Wall collective on Wednesday night (April 2) from 5.15pm to 7pm.

“My jewellery and artworks are inspired by the beauty of indoor plants, the charm of portraits, and the vibrancy of flowers. I use hand-painting and resin techniques to bring these inspirations to life.
“I love using bold and contrasting colours coupled with mark making to create unique pieces of wearable art and botanical portraitures.”

Emily Lake

Emily Lake operates Flame Art Glass in Hope, south of Richmond. She’s been working with glass since 1978.

Helen Coombs

“I do not have any formal qualifications in art, however I have been to many workshops and have had private lessons.
“Art was my stress relief during my business days and since retiring to Golden Bay, it has become my main focus.
“I started doing watercolour, then alcohol ink, and for the last couple of years I have been having fun with mixed media.”

Nelson Jewellery Week
From April 10-16, venues all around town will be focused on the work of jewellery makers from all round the country.
Wall to Wall Art is hosting Rhys Hall, a Westport-based jeweller and stone carver. Rhys specialises in original contemporary works in a variety of materials – stone, jade, glass and shell – with a strong focus on utilising resources gathered from local beaches.
Strata, a series of wearable works, will feature in the gallery window for the whole of Jewellery Week, and will be available for purchase.

“In geological terms, strata are distinctive adjacent layers of rock, creating a lithic chronology of the earth’s development over time. This body of work utilises a range of different stones sourced, gathered and gifted from throughout the South Island. These have been cut, lapped and then reassembled in multiple stages into minimal landscapes, structures and symbols.
“The impetus for this series stemmed from a desire to use stone as a material in a more painterly fashion, inspired by colour field work and modernist abstraction. Differing hues, patterns and textures may depict earth, sky, bush, roads, rivers or beaches, or simply be used for shade and tone to create liminal spaces, portals and icons that exist on a less physical plane. The resulting intimately scaled artworks can be equally enjoyed whether hung on a wall or around the wearer’s neck.”
Come and meet Rhys at Wall to Wall during the Evening Jewels Twilight Tour (5-8pm Thursday 10) when Rhys will be happy to discuss and share aspects of his work.
The evening provides another opportunity for a leisurely browse of artwork from Wall to Wall Art’s dozen members, and art and jewellery from April guest artists: Ana Burne, Emily Lake, Andrew Leck and Helen Coombs. Light refreshments available.
