Introducing the amazing Nina from Kingdom of Klah: Little Beehive Co-op
Little Beehive member spotlight – Introducing the amazing Nina from Kingdom of Klah
* What is your typical morning routine like?
– Most mornings before I head to the studio I go on a nature expedition with my dog Captain Lilith, a former sea pirate Queen who once reigned the seas of Klah. We are lucky enough to live on the edge of an estuary, which means it’s a different place every day & we can find many interesting things to prod at with sticks. This walk serves as a portal to the parallel universe of Klah for the day.
* What are your sources of inspiration, & how do they translate into your work?
– I like to turn my life into a carnival of people & places, roam around and observe all the things & then sit very still, completely by myself with a pen & see what happens. I also read a lot of books and listen to a lot of music, which sparks something in my brain. I find when I go to concerts I see patterns & pictures in my mind’s eye which I can use later.
* What type of work environment makes you most productive?
– There are two main sides to my work – the inventing of designs and characters, & the physical screenprinting of them. I have one studio for each of these – I do my screenprinting in an old kiln shed in Riwaka which is focussed on print production & being able to make a mess, I also have a magical shared space in an historic fruit shed over an estuary(Zappekin), which has an amazing colourful energy. I start most of my designs by the beach or sitting in parks, or on buses to London etc. I’m off to the Republic of Georgia next week for a month to create some new things in a new parallel universe, far away from day to day life printing & filling orders etc.
*Do you have a favourite podcast or album you like to listen to while you work?
– When I’m drawing or writing I like to listen to experimental or psychedelic music, anything that creates landscapes in the mind – there MUST be music! I’ve recently started listening to audiobooks – When I’m in the time sensitive part of the print process I switch to fast music like Disco/Punk/Techno so I can turn myself into a high-speed robot and avoid ink drying into screens – it’s amazing how the body naturally moves in time to music.
