Introducing long time member and the current feature artist on our gallery wall @estherremnant ✨
What is your typical morning routine like, and how does it prepare you for your creative work?
A slow wake up for me. Coffee in bed with a catch up on news stories and family, scream upstairs (thought I should be honest) to get my teenage son out of bed, pick some fresh produce from the garden for lunch and set off for the studio, a lovely walk along the river into town.
What elements are most important for you to be productive and creative?
A good night’s sleep makes aaalllll the difference.
What are your primary sources of inspiration, and how do they translate into your work?
For me it’s the wild! I adore being in the bush and have become a little obsessed with foraging. I worked in conservation until recently, and spend many hours volunteering. I currently have an exhibition running at the Little Beehive called ‘Sanctuary’, which sums up my work pretty nicely. “It’s easy for me to find sanctuary when times are tough. It’s just out there. In the beauty of small living things beneath our feet, in the sky, under the surface. The patterns, the textures, the smells, the sounds. Don’t forget to stop, watch, listen, converse and be amazed. Remember that you are part of this, and it is much more significant than any of us.”
What type of work environment makes you happiest and most productive?
Ideally I’d be outside, but it doesn’t work well with my big printing press and beautiful papers. Luckily I share a studio with 3 other special humans, sometimes it’s hard to focus, but generally I find that we encourage, share, inspire and assist each other every day. I wouldn’t go back to working alone, I’m much happier and motivated with my gang.
Do you have a favourite podcast or album you like to listen to while you work?
I have all my fave songs on one massive playlist so I can shuffle and never guess what’s coming. If I need to really focus I keep it to low key indie folk and piano music.
