At Te Pupuri Taonga o te Taiao (Nelson Provincial Museum) we are celebrating with Toi Kuru, an exhibition honouring the lifetime of work by master of kōwhaiwhai, Sandy Adsett.
Across six decades, Sandy has woven together tradition and innovation, lifting mana, colour, and culture through his art. His kōwhaiwhai patterns speak of whakapapa and whenua, connecting language and design as living carriers of identity and story.
Within the Museum’s collection is a heke (kōwhaiwhai) board, painted in red, white, and black, forming an almost tuna-like pattern. Once part of a wharenui and now darkened with smoke from generations who sat beneath it, this heke reflects a wider world of kōwhaiwhai patterns, each one telling its own story. Taonga like this inspire new ideas and open pathways for future creativity.
Visit the Exhibition Gallery to experience Toi Kuru, Sandy Adsett and the power of kōwhaiwhai as a language of its own.
