View Ports exhibition & workshops: Make Shift Spaces

View Ports exhibition & workshops
Opening Night tonight at 18 Bridge St
Things are happening with Spring Clean Whakaū Nelson, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t got other projects happening too.

Calling all lovers of printmaking
View Ports offers a conceptual frame for an exhibition of works by local printmakers who meet monthly to experiment with new techniques and share practice.
There’s a whole schedule of an opening event tonight (Fri 12 Sept), meet-ups, workshops and walkshops (16-19 Sept) at www.artecology.net/viewports/
The View Ports installation in an empty shop at 18 Bridge St will be the focal point for an ‘open’ working space experimenting with rapid techniques for capturing and reproducing images and story. Instigated by artist Vicki Smith and coinciding with a series of events by Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects.
Many thanks to Thompson Property Group for this space.

Check out the exhibition ‘Drawing – a daily ritual’ at Quiet Dog Gallery (on until 4 Oct). It’s a group show with David Ryan, Sally Burton, Yvette Byrd, Jane Tan, Jo Kinross, Louise Marmont and Richard Sellars.

Spring Clean is underway!
Yes, we know the offical dates are 11-19 October, but things are happening already! Last weekend our Angel Gardeners were out and about in the city centre. First stop at the bus stop – checking out how the plants have been thriving since they were planted a year ago – they all needed a jolly good trim! And then it was onto the planter boxes at upper Bridge St – they cleared away masses of old growth to let spring do its thing.
We’ve got more Spring Clean projects happening over the next month – and if you’re doing some spring cleaning – let us know! If your interested in learning more, and especially how to join in, head to www.makeshiftspaces.nz/spring-clean for info, to sign up, to download tiles for social media, and generally be part of it all.

Let the planting, cleaning and art-installing begin!
What’s happening over the next few weeks:
– ArtWalk is getting an artwash!
– more garden refreshes in New St, Bridge St, Vanguard St and more. These are all little gardens usually out the front of businesses that just need a bit of attention to start blooming for us all to admire.
– more ArtWorks and ArtDoors at Selwyn Place – this project has been mammoth with massive results. In the last 12 months, the building at 15-35 Selwyn Place has been cleaned, painted, had its garden replanted and a couple of ArtWorks installed, with three ArtDoors going up any day now. Big ups to Magenta Creative Space, Nelson Taxis, VenueTech, Beneficiaries & Unwaged Workers Trust and Mr Music as well, of course, to Thompson Property Group.
Spring Clean Whakatū Nelson is an encouragement to all inner-city businesses, organisations and anyone who uses the city, to get your thinking caps on about how you can join in. It might be cleaning, planting, or a general tidy up – a little effort has big results!
Head to the website to see some of the things that happened last year, and to sign up for 2025.
Remember to let us know how you plan to contribute to the Spring Clean Whakatū Nelson initiative.
You can also join volunteer teams in enhancing our community spaces by revitalising gardens and removing graffiti.
Check out the website for more info – we’ll be adding to it as things progress.
