Nelson photographer recognised at national awards

Nelson photographer Tim Cuff has won the senior photographer category at the New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Year awards.

The awards were presented in Auckland last week.

Tim Cuff’s photo of volunteers attempting to save 39 whales stranded near Farewell Spit was part of his winning senior photographer of the year portfolio.

Cuff’s portfolio included a scene from a whale stranding near Farewell Spit in December last year as volunteers battled over several days to save 39 whales.

It also featured an image from the public vigil for Nelson police officer Lyn Fleming who died on New Year’s Day after being struck by a car while she was on foot patrol in a city carpark. In the photo, members of Fleming’s family embrace on the Church Steps as a stricken colleague holds a hand over his face.

Cuff entered the society and photo story categories of the awards, in which he has been a regular finalist. He has previously won the photo story category.

Judges said his images were always carefully constructed, and often emotionally charged.

Cuff is a freelance photographer based in Nelson and covering the top of the south.

Nelson Mail photographer Braden Fastier was highly commended in the society category for his picture of Tasman Mako fans getting fast food during a wet and wild Ranfurly Shield defence against Auckland as seagulls circled overhead.

The overall NZ Geographic Photographer of the Year was won by The Press photojournalist Iain McGregor.
