34th Nelson Summer Kite Festival returns this weekend

Neale Park will once again burst into colour, creativity and community spirit as the Nelson Summer Kite Festival returns on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 January 2026, from 12–5pm both days.

Everything is falling into place for this much-loved summer event — the only thing left to organise is the weather. We’re hoping for gentle afternoon sea breezes, blue skies and no wet stuff. If you’re coming along, feel free to bring a kite and join in the fun.

Look to the skies and enjoy the amazing kites flown by local and New Zealand kite fliers, filling Neale Park with movement, colour and joy. There’s plenty happening on the ground too, making it a perfect outing for all ages.

Food and refreshments will be well covered, with something for everyone. You’ll find Deanos Dogs and hot chips, Sweet Azz candy floss, Trevor and his iconic yellow bus serving real fruit ice creams, Popcycle ice blocks, frozen fruit, Lickety Split snow cones and milkshakes, Afghani food, Indonesian beef satays and spring rolls, plus Gelato Roma gelato and sorbets. Please note: cash is preferred, so come prepared.

Adding even more colour to the weekend, Sazzle Dazzle Face Painting by Sarah will be at the festival both days, delighting tamariki with creative designs. Rainbow Flight Kites will also have a stall at the festival on both days, with EFTPOS available.

The Nelson Kite Festival is proudly run by the Nelson Kite Club and funded by the generous donations of the community, helping keep this iconic summer tradition alive.

So grab your whānau, a picnic blanket and your sense of wonder, and head to Neale Park, Nelson, for a weekend of sky-high fun.
Keep looking up!
