A newly hatched kiwi pukupuku chick was spotted on camera six months after they were reintroduced in the predator-free Brook Waimārama Sanctuary in Nelson!
This sighting indicates that they are breading, a huge win for the conservation of the species🙌
Kiwi pukupuku are the smallest of the five species of kiwi, and are classifed as Threatened-Nationally Increasing due to important conservation mahi such as this.
Through our Community Conservation Fund in partnership with the Tindall Foundation, we are proud to support the Brook Waimārama Sanctuary, most recently with its tuatara relocation project and the Mangātarere Restoration Society’s pekapeka project in 2024.
Congratulations to our friends over at Brook Waimārama Sanctuary!
Everyone say a huge welcome to this new little chick! (and let us know how many times you saw them trip 🥹)
