Jasmine Jessen | 17 May, 4 pm
Nelson-raised soprano Jasmine Jessen returns home for a special concert at the NCMA, joined by pianist Sarah Watkins. The programme offers a rich journey through art song and opera, from the lush romanticism of Rachmaninoff to Benjamin Britten’s song cycle On This Island. Audiences will also be treated to a selection of beloved operatic arias by Mozart, Bellini, Donizetti, Puccini, and Verdi.
Modern Māori Quartet | 17 July, 7:30 pm
With their infectious charisma, crack-up humour and cool charm, an evening with The Modern Maori Quartet promises an unforgettable trip down memory lane through Aotearoa’s rich musical history. Harking back to the Maori show bands of yesteryear, Maaka, James, Fran and Matariki give a fresh spin on some ol’ school classics while seamlessly weaving in hits of today peppered with a couple of originals for good measure. Let their dulcet tones and sweet harmonies sweep you off your feet and carry you into nostalgic bliss as they “play something we all know”.
Celebration Concert | 26 September, 7:30 pm
This special concert marks 125 years since the opening of the auditorium at the Nelson Centre of Musical Arts, celebrating the music that continues to fill the building today.
The programme brings together some of the region’s leading ensembles and musicians, including performers from the Nelson Civic Choir, Nelson Symphony Orchestra, Chroma Choir, Nelson Youth Choir and NCMA’s youth string ensemble Schola Musica. Alongside these larger groups, the evening will also feature chamber performances from musicians who regularly rehearse and perform at the centre.
This event celebrates the many musicians and community groups who make NCMA such a vital part of Nelson’s cultural life. Audience members are warmly invited to support the Centre on the night, helping ensure this historic venue continues to serve future generations of musicians.
