Nelson Provincial Museum is excited to announce our upcoming exhibition, Taku Rau Tīkumu.
He whetū i te rangi, he whetū ki te whenua
A star in the sky, a star on the earth
This major new exhibition shines a light on tīkumu, a remarkable taonga of Te Waipounamu, and explores the enduring relationship between people and alpine landscapes through the story of this resilient mountain plant.
Researched and curated by Hamuera and Naomi Aporo-Manihera, the exhibition features a significant collection of tīkumu taonga, bringing together mātauranga Māori, science, oral histories, photographs, rare records, and contemporary art from across Aotearoa.
For centuries, iwi Māori have held tīkumu alongside the highest symbols of chiefly status. The exhibition highlights the ingenuity of southern Māori weaving traditions, the environmental knowledge that sustains them, and the revitalisation of practices once at risk of being lost.
Supported by He Aka Ka Toro under the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), and Creative New Zealand.
Coming soon.
