LATEST NEWS AND A REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT UPDATE FROM NELSON AIRPORT

A message from the CEO

Our new terminal is on the up and up.

Without a doubt, one the most exciting milestones so far this year has been raising the first roof triangle into place for our new terminal.  We were already marvelling at the sheer size of the timber structures as upward construction began but that first triangle gave us our first glimpse of just how striking and truly awesome the new Nelson Airport terminal will be. The plans and 3D models did not show the warmth of colour of the LVL (laminated veneer lumber), the interesting design features or the sheer size of each section. We congratulate Naylor Love and their sub-contractors on the precision work they have been doing and a great health & safety record on the project to date.

Recent weather events have provided some interesting and unexpected challenges for all of us in the Nelson/Tasman region. Our thoughts are still with members of our extended airport family who have been affected by cyclones and storm surges. We closed the Airport Perimeter Walkway due to erosion during the storms. We are currently looking at the possibility of moving the fenceline and hope to re-open the walkway in the near future.

Thanks to all of you who have been working with us to improve emergency preparedness throughout the airport precinct. We are very happy with how our Nelson Airport teams have embraced new protocols and technologies to make us more effective during weather events.

In February, Nelson Airport had 86,772 passengers fly through our airport. This result is pleasing to see after a slight drop for February during the previous year.  We are still on target for another record breaking year overall.

As we continue to create the best regional airport in New Zealand, we thank you again for your support.

Rob Evans
