Pic’s Piki Mai
Location: Church Steps, Nelson (Upper Trafalgar Street, Nelson)
Time/Date: Daily, until 28 Oct from 21:00-23:55
In celebration of the 25th Nelson Arts Festival, and due to popular demand, we’re thrilled to bring back crowd favourite Piki Mai, sponsored by none other than Pic’s Peanut Butter.
Piki Mai, an abstract audio visual artwork, creates a wondrous illusion through large scale projection and lighting on Nelson’s Christ Church Cathedral and the Church Steps. Originally created for the 2011 Nelson Arts Festival, Piki Mai tells the story of Nelson in a visually spectacular way.
The content of Piki Mai artwork is based on a wide range of images and text from earlier times: paintings, drawings, photos, film, newspaper and magazine articles, historical and mythical records and personal stories. The maker of the work Michael Hodgson, with the help of his digital collaborator Chris Macmillan, has woven these literal provocations into an abstract moving image work that is a feast for the eyes.
Pic’s Piki Mai will begin on the evening of the Mask Parade & Carnivale, Friday 18 October. Make a night of it and help us kick off the 2019 Nelson Arts Festival!
Pic’s Piki Mai is a joint Light Nelson Event and Nelson Arts Festival project.
