The Attraction of Activated Charcoal | Global Soap

The Attraction of Activated Charcoal
We hear about Activated Charcoal a lot these days but what is it really?

Firstly, activated charcoal “adsorbs” (nope this is not a typo) toxins, it does not “absorb” them. A material that adsorbs, like charcoal, acts like a magnet to draw impurities to its surface. Not be confused with the word absorption, in which the toxins or chemicals would actually pass into and become part of the material … like a sponge absorbs water.

Activated charcoal is derived from natural resources such as wood, coconut shells and bamboo. Global Soap uses bamboo derived charcoal which is a special breed of rapidly growing bamboo stalks. Millions of tiny holes (or pores) form in the stalks as they grow. These tiny holes increase the surface area of the bamboo – one gram of bamboo has a surface area of up to 600 square metres!. After five years, the bamboo is harvested, cut in pieces and burnt in ovens at temperatures of up to 1000 degrees. The bamboo is then ground into a powder and injected with steam. This ‘activates’ the bamboo which further increases the surface area to enhance the rate of adsorption.

Hand Washing – Keep up the Good Work

Keep up the good work on hand washing. The humble soap bar is a super hero amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Plain old fashioned soap dissolves the lipid (fat) layer that surrounds the COVID-19 cell contagion and thus destroys the cell.

  • Use soap and water
  • Wash your hands often
  • For 20 secs at least.
