Hardy St Eatery – fine dining with a slice of home

James Rutherford and his family moved here from Wellington, and like many of us, felt the pull of the year-round sunshine and amazing lifestyle that Nelson offers.

James is a chef who brings a huge wealth of experience and has worked with some high-profile chefs in London including Peter Gordon. He decided he would follow a career in hospitality when he was 15 years old.

“Nelson feels like home and we love chatting to locals and hearing great feedback about our food and venue. Nelson has to be one of the most amazing places in the world and we love it here.” says James.

Located at 136 Hardy Street, the building had a major facelift inside in 2018. James engaged local Architect Matthew Hay to design a modern and functional space that really added the x-factor to the overall dining experience.

As well as putting his personal stamp on the new look venue, James has his extensive collection of International Cooking books and mid-century ceramics on display. It looks impressive while maintaining a down to earth feel.

Matthew has also worked on many local restaurant projects like this and has done a great job. It’s a beautiful space with a cosy fire inside. What’s not to love about that?

“Our philosophy at Hardy St Eatery is to create an atmosphere similar to enjoying a meal at home – serving creative, seasonal and approachable food from a regularly changing menu with damn good booze and coffee.” says Matt

We are thrilled to be back to normal after the lockdown, and we instigated a click & collect option for our customers.

We are forever grateful for the local supporters who stood by us during this season.
