Honeyland takes us to a remote village in Northern Macedonia where we meet Hatidže Muratova, one of the last beekeepers of wild bees in Europe. She uses ancient methods to cultivate the bees but when a new family moves in next door, her bees and her livelihood are confronted.
Honeyland explores environmental topics such as climate change, biodiversity loss and the exploitation of natural resources. It is also a powerful human story capturing Hatidže’s challenges with her family, her neighbours and her way of life.
Honeyland received numerous awards and nominations at film festivals, including three awards at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and two nominations at the 92nd Academy Awards in the categories for Best International Feature Film and Best Documentary Feature
