4 Lanes Festival Returns to Nelson- Save the Date 28 Aug

4 Lanes Festival

A late-winter festival of family fun, four lanes in the central city host a celebration of culture, hospitality and art with a range of free entertainment at the end of August.

First held in 2019, the Festival encourages people to wander four key areas: Kirby Lane with a Noodle Market and global food stalls; Fiddle Lane with visual arts plus performances by Middle Eastern and Indian street bands; Old Bank Lane features story-telling and circus fun; and the fourth ‘lane’ in Morrison Square hosts a vibrant Latin Quarter with dancing, live music and food from Argentina, Colombia and Brazil.

Throughout the lanes roving street performers will entertain, while part of Buxton Square will host a fun fair complete with Ferris wheel, and a variety stage. Performing acts include Nelson Intermediate Kapa Haka, Nelson Jazz Club, Fat Sally and the Splankies (Fat Sally referring to a 100-year-old tuba not a person!), BennynBronte, Footloose Ceilidh band and several popular numbers by Nelson Musical Theatre.

Venue: Kirby, Fiddle and Old Bank Lanes and Morrison Square
Date: 28 August, 3-9pm

Youth Lane

An additional laneway will run in conjunction with Nelson’s 4 Lanes Festival this year in the form of a Youth Lane, being developed by a combined colleges team.
Organised separately but running at the same time, the Youth Lane is specifically targeting people aged 14-18. Different zones in the central city’s Church Street will be set up to support live youth bands, art projections, learning new skills such as audio system techniques, giant games, a chill-out zone and a skateboard competition. Nearby cafes and restaurants will offer the option of enjoying an evening meal in town.
Venue: Church Street, Nelson Central City
Date: Saturday 28 August, 3 – 9pm
