Storey Collection – serving Nelsonions for three generations
Jenny is a warm person, surrounded by beautiful lighting and home decor. We dropped in to say hello and ask her some questions. Customers come in during the interview and she knows them by name, as if they were childhood friends. There’s something unique and special about this local businesswoman… read on and learn something new.
“We have found that locals are wanting to nest. They want their home to be their sanctuary. With the lockdown in 2020 and travel restrictions in place, locals are using their money to update their living spaces. We have just been to Auckland to buy a huge amount of stock, as shipping challenges will leave many retail outlets with empty shelves. We want to be prepared for this and have plenty to offer our customers.”
Since there is such an extensive range of lighting products available they have invested in a website that makes it easy for customers to browse online.
There are inspirational style guides and lots of useful information to help make home styling easier. You can purchase gift vouchers, view entire catalogues and enjoy images of the shop in its various stages to see how they have evolved.
“The business was founded by my family and despite having a few name changes, we are proud to say it’s now a 3rd generation family business. My daughter works in the shop with me.” says Jenny.
“My dad believed strongly in homeownership and instilled that in us. I can imagine that may have been inspired by his ancestors, who arrived in New Zealand from England holding on to the dream that they could make a better life for their families. We are currently fundraising for Habitat For Humanity. It’s such a great way to make positive change on a local level. We are donating products and want to raise $20,000 to help a family own their own home in Nelson. Our customers have been very generous and supportive.”
“During the lockdown, we were so grateful for our loyal customers who called us and ordered products because they wanted to support local. Theres a special bond between us and our longtime customers whom we have served over the years. It’s a very rewarding feeling.”
On the weekends Jenny and her husband have a large garden in Stoke that needs plenty of attention, so thats her happy place.
“We also love to pack a thermos (yes, that is pretty old school) and drive to a secluded spot near the Abel Tasman or nearby and enjoy a cuppa while we soak up the views. The Nelson region is spectacular and we enjoy exploring new places.”
“Speaking of family, we have a cat called Wally. We sometimes call him Sir Wallace. He’s one of those cats who ‘owns you’. He is very particular about what he wants and we love him to bits.”
Make sure you drop in and see what they have on offer. Find them at 65 Collingwood Street, Nelson.
